major updates to the main homepage. i built this page from scratch, inspired by the in-game menu from front mission 3. i also made some small changes to the /psx page, finally fixing the bug that was incorrectly distorting images. i also fixed the general organization of files on the backend of the site.

i need to make changes to the main page to force width on the main elements in order to avoid weird scaling, but i generally like the look and feel of the whole page.

i am currently designing a new flow to this blog page. right now it's built to hold basic text updates, and i do not want to have much more than that but i would like to start using this more to track game development progress.

since at least november, i have been working on a playdate game. the game is an endless runner where you control a skateboarder and avoid obstacles as you skate through a city. i made really solid progress within the first month, especially during the learning process of using the playdate sdk for the first time.

i started to reach a point in the development where i had most of the programming complete, but needed to begin adding animation to the otherwise static placeholder images. in turn, i needed to start focusing on creating the art. i had a cross country flight upcoming, and felt it would be a perfect chance to sit and work on sprite animations. however, my lack of confidence in creating visual art really slowed progression on the project overall.

now, i have a list of every element remaining in the game, broken down into tasks with time estimates attached to each. the majority of the work remaining is visual, with some minor programming to sort out once my final sprite animations are in place, and music. by rough estimation, with what i can put into working on the project each week, i think i can be done by the first week of june and i am setting a soft goal for myself to hit full release by the end of june. i figure this will account for unforeseen bugs and potential failures in programming animation and some of the final game state elements i need to test once the title screen and high score system are wrapped up.

i might share the process i created for building the sprites in the game, but for now i will share what i completed today. i am using captures of skateboarding to help me in drawing the sprites and right now, i have a handful of frames from the captures that are converted into black and white images and imported into aseprite. i just wrapped work on removing all unwanted elements from the main push/ollie animation.

my next goal is to fully clean up each phase of the animation into the final sprites. right now, you can tell that the animation is of someone skateboarding, but it is fuzzy and you cannot make out a clear image of a skateboard moving. additionally, the main character is meant to be skating while wearing a skull mask, which i need to add into each frame. once i have the main cycle updated to reflect what i want the final look to be, i can start applying that to the remaining tricks i have capture for.
